Special Events and Exhibitions

Quex Museum holds a number of exhibitions and events each year that add further attraction to a visit.

Exhibition: The Archer at Quex.

The Museum's collections contain weaponry from many cultures and this special exhibition will feature archery equipment from all over the world as well as pointing to other examples in the Museum.  The bow has been a favoured hunting weapon for some 30,000 years. From flint arrowheads in our archaeology collection to musical instruments from Africa, based on the bow, visitors will find much to delight and interest them. Archery competitors at the Olympics in London in 2012 will be based at training camps in Kent and a modern competition bow will show how this ancient technology has embraced modern materials and engineering

Free Family Friendly daily drop-in sessions at Quex Museum.

The dragons are brooding in their lair. St. George is outside, but unprepared for battle. Your task is to look around the museum and find suitable arms and armour for him to use against his foe.  Either through drawing and colouring or cutting and sticking prepare the army of St. George for the battle with the beasts and then sneak into the cave to discover how many dragons there are and search for the Emperor Dragon.

Museum opening times and Entrance charges apply. Friends of Quex and Quexplorers FREE ADMISSION to the Museum. See website page or call 01843 842168 for details.

Continuing in 2008

A VICTORIAN HOUSE

This exhibition will look at Quex House during the last two decades of the nineteenth century, tracing the modernisation and expansion of the house in order to meet the needs of a growing family in a way that reflected their social standing in the local community.  We will show how life was lived here – by the family, servants and tenants.

Naturally a central figure is Percy Powell-Cotton, who by the time he inherited Quex on his father’s death in 1894, was already travelling the world and bringing back the specimen animals and cultural items that led him to set up the Museum at Quex.

Exhibition panels in the Corridor Gallery will set the scene. Key themes will be developed and illustrated throughout the Museum, House and Gardens providing a fascinating insight into this Victorian household during a period of great change.

Very latest news:  Following coverage in the local press, the discoveries of 'love tokens' can be seen on display in the House.

From 16 March

THE RAMSGATE HOARD

The Isle of Thanet is particularly rich in archaeological remains and the Powell-Cotton family, particular Antoinette Powell-Cotton but also her father, Major Percy Powell-Cotton, were heavily involved in local archaeological exploration.

This Bronze Age hoard is on display for the first time.
