Library

Overlooking the rear garden, the Library originally interconnected with the Boudoir, forming a spacious double 'Withdrawing Room'. Following the extension of the house in the 1880s it became the Library we see today, housing some 3,000 books reflecting the tastes of the different generations of the family from the 18th century to the present day.

The portrait is of the Major's wife, Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881 - 1964) as a young woman. The centre map table is impressive as it was where the Major planned all his expeditions, but of most interest to visitors is the Congreve 'rolling-ball' clock - the mesmeric movement of which delights young and old alike.
