Walled Garden

The Walled Garden was used to produce fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the family and House until the early 20th century. Many Victorian glasshouses remain, restored to their teak-framed splendour together with a Cucumber House, Orchid House, Fernery and Stove House. Goldfish thrive among the water lilies in the original stone water tanks.

Visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this peaceful retreat surrounded by the fragrances and vibrant colours of the exotic plants that uniquely grow in this sheltered location. Plants from the garden are on sale in the Museum Shop and, seasonally, fruit and vegetables such as figs, mulberries, asparagus, rhubarb, raspberries, runner beans and kiwi fruits.

'The Apple Walk' leaflet is available from the Museum Shop to guide visitors to view the interesting old varieties of apple tree grown in the Garden.
